South Lane Wheels to Dim Lights and Lend Support for Earth Hour

South Lane Wheels joins the growing list of supporting organizations that are committing to take a stand by turning the lights out on pollution and creating a cleaner, safer and more secure future.

Earth Hour 2010

Earth Hour 2010

March 25th, 2010

Cottage Grove, OR– South Lane Wheels announced today that they will turn off all non-essential lighting at their Birch Avenue office for Earth Hour, and encourage their members to do the same.

Earth Hour, which takes place Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 p.m. local time, is an event in which millions of Americans will turn out their lights for one hour in support of action on climate change and toward creating a cleaner, safer and more secure future. 2010 marks the third year of the event, which attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. last year, and nearly a billion people around the world, as lights dimmed on such global icons as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sydney’s Opera House, the Great Pyramids of Gaza and New York’s Empire State Building.

Notable U.S. landmarks such as Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, Sea World in Orlando, the strip in Las Vegas, New York’s Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Washington D.C.’s National Cathedral, California’s Santa Monica Pier and the Space Needle in Seattle are among the hundreds of sites that will turn off non-essential lighting for the hour, in what is expected to be the largest-ever call to action on climate change.

The Route Bus Advertising Area

Route Bus Advertising

February 23rd, 2010

Think of it as a moving billboard, designed to spread word of your business as far as possible. Because that is, in effect, what an ad on one of our buses is.

As an advertiser on one of our buses, you will receive exposure throughout Cottage Grove, Creswell, Eugene and Springfield for an entire year, for as little as $10 per month.

For repeated exposure to pedestrians, drivers and local businesses, we have spots on the bus exteriors of up to 58″ x 26″. If you want to speak more to the passengers, or change your message up to once per month, the interior of the buses have space available in their advertising panels for your ad – full-color and laminated.

Click here for a complete list of prices and spaces available.

South Lane Wheels is Turning 30!

SLW's 1986 Calendar Image

SLW's 1986 Calendar Image

February 3rd, 2010

This year, SLW will reach another major milestone: its 30th year of service to the people of Lane County.

We have come a long way in that time. Thirty years ago, when our first vehicle, the ‘Gray Ghost’, was purchased with a grant from the State Older Americans Act. Our fleet has since grown to include eight busses and two vans, with another one on the way.

During the ‘80s, South Lane Wheels’ single vehicle ran on a fixed schedule: Mondays to Lorane and Creswell, Tuesdays to Row River Road and Mosby Creek, Wednesdays to London, Thursdays within CG, and again on Fridays to Lorane. Now our busses cover these areas every weekday, as well as having a scheduled route within CG and operating a Metro service, which takes local residents to Eugene and Springfield throughout the week.

It has been wonderful to see our efforts toward growth rewarded, and we would like to invite you to be a part of our success.

Plans are being made now for an unforgettable 30th birthday bash for SLW. Stay tuned!

Going the Distance: The South Lane Wheels Relay for Life Team

From the Recent Concert for a Cure

From the Recent Concert for a Cure

February 3rd, 2010

The staff at South Lane Wheels is excited to announce that they have a Relay for Life team.

For those of you who are not familiar with Relay for Life, the event was created to benefit the American Cancer Society; though since it was created, it has become a global phenomena. It is an opportunity to raise funds to fight cancer through research and awareness, while connecting with a vast and supportive group of people from your own community.  At present, Cottage Grove is home to 13 relay teams, and has already raised over $9,000 this year.

The Relay takes place on June 18th, but the sooner you sign up to be a part of the South Lane Wheels Relay Team, the easier it will be to reach your personal fundraising goal.

If you would like to be a part of our team, please call Diane or Tracie at 541-942-0456, or visit our ACS homepage.

Finding Shelter: The Freezing Nights Program

February 3rd, 2010

In March of 2009, below-freezing temperatures brought record numbers of homeless in from the cold. Unfortunately, the few shelters open that winter in Lane County were unable to handle the sudden increase in  occupancy.

This year, South Lane Wheels has joined the Freezing Nights Program in the hope that no one will have to be turned away this time.

On nights when temperatures drop below 29˚ F, SLW will open its doors to the homeless. They will be provided with cots, bedding, safe storage, hot beverages and snacks, which have been provided by the Community Sharing program.

Interim Executive Director: Iva Pfeifer

Iva Pfeifer, Interim Director

January 14th, 2010

A changing of the guard is occurring right now at South Lane Wheels. At the end of December, Executive Director Tara Sue Salusso handed in her resignation. In a press release to the Cottage Grove Sentinel, Tara cited seeking more opportunities for her son by moving to a larger city as the primary reason for her decision. Tara stepped down as Executive Director the next day, staying on at South Lane Wheels until the end of January as a private consultant.

South Lane Wheels’ Board Treasurer Iva Pfeifer has taken on the challenge of acting as a replacement Executive Director in the meantime. Iva’s 14 years in the Finance Department of the City of Big Bear Lake, California, has well primed her for the task.

Read Iva Pfeifer’s letter of introduction to learn more about South Lane Wheels’ Interim Executive Director.

December 5th, 2009

Many thanks to everyone who tirelessly contributed to the first annual Holiday Crafters’ Faire and Bake Sale in Cottage Grove. South Lane Wheels was present, thanks to everyone who spent the week baking, and we were excited to see the level of community participation in this event, even though it was held on short notice. We would also like to give a shout out to Fleur de Lis and Rally Coffee, who donated to our table’s wares.

With hope, we can help to make this great event a Cottage Grove tradition.

and the Cottage Grove High School Rally

November 5th, 2009

With the exciting prospect of a new Route bus arriving this year, South Lane Wheels decided to team up with the students of Cottage Grove to make this bus unique. To this end, a design contest was initiated to give the newest bus a new and beautiful exterior image. Through October, the students of Cottage Grove High School created and submitted a number of excellent designs.

Once the designs were voted on by the Cottage Grove Middle School students, the winners were announced at the Cottage Grove High School pep rally. Read the full story and take a look at the top designs submitted, or view the pep rally photo gallery.
